The Health and Safety Executive have issued ACOP (Approved Code of Practice for Fork Lift Drivers) which places the onus firmly on employers to train ALL operators to a high standard of operational competency. New drivers must complete basic training and testing before operating any fork lift truck. The code states as follows:-

No person to whom this code applies should be employed to operate a lift truck unless he or she has satisfactorily completed basic training and testing as described in this code."

"The guidance is relevant to all operators. It should thus serve as a yardstick for the employers of existing truck operators, as well as those newly employed, to operate lift trucks."
